High-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE)— repeated repetitions of a series of high-intensity exercise bouts followed by rest— builds fitness and decreases fat as quickly as prolonged aerobic training. An Australian study found that young overweight men practicing HIIE lost nearly five pounds and increased aerobic capacity by 15 percent. They exercised for 20 minutes, three times per week for 12 weeks. Each exercise session consisted of repeated bouts of eight-second sprints on a stationary bike followed by 12 seconds of recovery. Unfortunately, the study did not compare HIIE with traditional moderate-intensity exercise. HIIE, a form of high intensity interval training, is an effective way to lose body fat and build fitness quickly. This type of interval training is often considered the best exercise to lose weight.
