What’s in ThermoHeat Cocktail?
L-Citrulline is a nonessential amino acid most commonly seen in pre workout supplements due to its ability to elevate plasma arginine levels in the body and increase nitric oxide production.
Arginine is a substrate (“fuel”) the body uses to produce nitric oxide. Higher arginine levels support greater nitric oxide production, which aids vasodilation, blood flow, and energy production.
Citrulline also improves ammonia buffering in skeletal muscle tissue, which can help delay the onset of fatigue thereby allowing individuals to complete a higher volume of work before fatiguing, which can benefit those looking to burn more calories during their workout.
Beyond improving exercise performance, citrulline may also support fat loss via a few different mechanisms.
Animal research indicates that nitric oxide inhibits proliferation and enhances the expression of two key adipogenic marker genes in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) and uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1).[3,4]
PPAR-ɑ is a protein that stimulates fat breakdown in various tissue in the body, including brown fat. PPAR-ɑ is activated during times of calorie restriction (such as dieting for fat loss), and it plays a key role in ketogenesis.
Other studies in animals have also identified some potential pro-fat burning benefits of Citrulline. A study using overweight rats fed high-fat diets noted that citrulline supplementation reduced blood sugar production in the liver and promoted abdominal fat loss.
What’s more, citrulline may also stimulate brown fat activity, which increases energy expenditure, further supporting fat loss.

The reason for this is that tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a building block for the neurotransmitter, dopamine.
Dopamine affects many things in the body, including mood, motivation, motor control, decision making, and reward. It is also involved in the regulation of brown fat thermogenesis.
Without sufficient dopamine, you wouldn’t have the motivation to do anything, nor the physical aptitude to accomplish it. And, if by some miracle you did complete your task, you’d have trouble feeling a sense of reward and accomplishment.
Furthermore, dopamine levels are known to decline during periods of stress, such as intense, prolonged physical activity, cognitively demanding tasks, or other physical & mental stresses (like dieting).
Supplementing with tyrosine has been shown to help reduce stress and improve cognitive flexibility.[7,8]
Previous research using a multi-ingredient supplement containing tyrosine, capsaicin, catechins and caffeine increased 4-h thermogenesis by 90 kJ more than placebo. This increased calorie burn maintained for 8 weeks and accompanied by a slight reduction in fat mass.
Quercetin Dihydrate (500mg)
Quercetin is a powerful polyphenol found in a number of foods common to the diet, including apples, red onions and kale.
Beyond its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and anti-atherogenic properties, quercetin is also noted to be a weak adenosine receptor antagonist, but not on the level of the most famous adenosine receptor antagonist, caffeine (which also happens to be included in ThermoHeat Cocktail). This is likely because quercetin is poorly absorbed in the brain.
In regards to weight loss, animal research has found that when high-fat diet obese-induced mice supplemented with quercetin, they increased expression of nonshivering thermogenesis genes in BAT, including uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1α (PGC1α).
Researchers also noted reductions in body weight and increased levels of physical activity in the mice supplemented with quercetin as well as improvements in gut microbiota dysbiosis.
Other animal research has found that quercetin may help reduced adipocyte size, inflammation, and insulin resistance.
More research in human subjects is needed to verify these preliminary findings, but the mechanisms by which quercetin may improve metabolic health and support weight loss are intriguing, to say the least.
Rutin is a quercetin glycoside where the quercetin molecule is bound to the sugar rutinose; a disaccharide formed from a combination of rhamnose and glucose. It is found in fruits and fruit rinds, including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes.
Traditionally, it has been used to improve circulation as it’s believed that rutin may help strengthen and increase flexibility in blood vessels.
Rutin also possesses antioxidant properties which help to protect the body from cellular damage caused by free radicals. And, the powerful flavonoid also helps to eliminate cholesterol from the body and supports collagen, keeping skin healthy and firm.
Research from 2011 using type 2 diabetics found that supplementation with 500mg per day of rutin reduced glucose levels and decreased both the systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Rutin supplementation was also found to significantly decrease the levels of LDL cholesterol.
Animal studies have also found that rutin protects against high fat diet-induced obesity, fatty liver and insulin resistance, and it may be useful in combating inflammation-induced obesity.
Caffeine Anhydrous (200mg)
There’s a reason that caffeine is in so many supplements -- it’s well-studied, safe (when used in reasonable doses), and known to confer a wide range of benefits.
Caffeine acts first and foremost as an adenosine receptor antagonist, which prevents the neurotransmitter adenosine from binding, leading to increased feelings of wakefulness and alertness.
Caffeine is also known to prompt the release of dopamine, which is part of the reason having a cup of coffee (or energy drink or pre workout) seems to improve mood.
In regards to weight loss, caffeine has been noted to help reduce appetite and increase metabolism.
In fact, studies have found that consuming just 100mg of caffeine (about the amount you get in a strong 8oz cup of drip coffee) can boost thermogenesis and increase energy expenditure up to 100 calories per day.
Other research finds that when caffeine is combined with other common fat burning supplements, the dose needed to activate brown adipose tissue thermogenesis can be as low as 77mg.
A common concern is that the effectiveness of caffeine may dwindle with continued use. However, some research has shown that even in habitual caffeine users (~100-200mg per day), ingesting a 100mg dose of caffeine still resulted in a significant thermogenic effect lasting over 3 hours.
Now, you may be wondering why ThermoHeat Cocktail contains a 200mg dose of caffeine.
Well, a number of studies have found that 200mg caffeine is effective for increasing attention, elevating mood, and reducing fatigue.[19,20,21,22,23]
Higher doses can also be effective (in fact, doses as high as 6-9mg/kg have been found to improve performance), but the 200mg dose is within a range that is tolerated well by most users.
Advantra Z (165mg)
Advantra Z is another ingredient that should be familiar to long time users of Advanced Molecular Labs supplements.
P-synephrine is a central nervous system stimulant and beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist that is structurally similar to ephedrine, but does not activate beta-1 or beta-2 receptors in the manner that ephedrine (and other stimulants do).
This is important because stimulation of beta-1 and beta-2 adrenoceptors typically results in elevated heart rate and/or blood pressure.
P-synephrine does, however, stimulate β-3 adrenoreceptors, which can lead to increases in metabolic rate and lipolysis. It may also help reduce food intake.
Research shows that p-synephrine has been shown boost resting metabolic rate, lipolysis, and exercise performance as well as reducing food intake.[25,26]
Furthermore, p-synephrine has also been found to increase energy expenditure, post exercise oxygen uptake, and fat oxidation, which resulted in better repetition performance and volume load during training.
There is also some research indicating that there is an additive effect when combining p-synephrine with caffeine helping athletes achieve faster, more powerful repetitions all with no additional perceived exertion or lactate accumulation.[25,26]
Velvet Bean Seed Extract (100mg)
Previously, when discussing tyrosine, we mentioned the importance that dopamine serves regarding both physical and mental performance.
In addition to supplying 2,000mg L-Tyrosine, ThermoHeat Cocktail also contains velvet bean extract, which contains L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) -- the direct precursor to dopamine.
Velvet bean has a long history of use in traditional medicine as both a tonic and an aphrodisiac due to its wide range of activities.
Velvet bean is also regarded for its neuroprotective, analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties.
Additional studies indicate that increasing dopamine levels in the body also can lead to greater thermogenic effects, which supports energy expenditure and weight loss.
Japanese Pagoda Extract (100mg)
The dried flowers and buds of the Japanese Pagoda (Sophora Japonica) have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The plant is rich in a number of bioactive compounds, but the main flavonoids identified within are:
It is this last one, kaempferol, for which this extract has been standardized.
So, what is kaempferol?
It is a powerful flavonoid that has been noted to possess some interesting thermogenic properties. Besides Sophora japonica, kaempferol can also be found naturally occurring in broccoli, tea, and grapefruit.
In case you weren’t aware, fat cells aren’t the only cells that are capable of burning energy via thermogenesis, muscle cells can too.
When a muscle contracts, heat is generated, which contributes to why you feel hot and start sweating during intense exercise.
Research has also found that skeletal muscle can perform non-shivering thermogenesis, which means it can give off heat and burn energy outside of exercise.
Furthermore, kaempferol has been noted stimulate thyroid hormone production, which subsequently activates thermogenesis in brown fat.
Collectively, this makes kaempferol very interesting from a mechanistic standpoint in that it shows the ability to induce thermogenesis in different types of cells in the body.
Grape Skin Extract (100mg)
Grape skin extract is rich in a variety of polyphenols which have been found to stimulate endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and improve exercise performance.
Research indicates that supplementing with polyphenol-rich extracts may significantly increase average power (5%), total power output (5%), and maximal peak power output (3.7%).
Additional research notes that supplementation with grape skin extract can reduce muscle damage after high intensity strength training.[33,34]
Furthermore, high polyphenol intakes have been noted to improve cardiovascular risk factors (mainly blood pressure and the lipid profile) as well as decrease inflammatory markers.[35,36]
Cell studies have also found that dietary polyphenols may suppress adipocyte differentiation and triglyceride accumulation, stimulate lipolysis and fatty acid β-oxidation, and reduce inflammation.
Cyanimax is a standardized blackberry extract containing 40% cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G).
C3G is a powerful antioxidant and anthocyanin.
Animal studies have found that the compound can reduce body weight gain, and attenuate obesity-associated dyslipidemia and insulin resistance via up-regulating serum adiponectin level.
Adiponectin is a hormone involved in regulating glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown.
A most recent 2020 study found that C3G also reduced High-Fat-Diet–Induced weight gain and impairment of glucose tolerance in mice.
C3G also is a known activator of AMPK, with downstream effects of increasing glucose and lipid uptake into muscle cells.
What’s more, in vitro studies find that C3G may reduces the amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced inside the adipocyte, indicating antioxidant capabilities, and it may also anti-diabetic effects via acting on PPARy.[40,41]
GarCitrin is a premium-grade extract of garcinia cambogia standardized to 50% hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and 5% garcinol.
Hydroxycitric acid has been recognized for almost fifty years for its potential in supporting weight loss. However, results from studies using the compound though are mixed.[42,43]
This may be due to a lack of bioavailability.
Garcinol is a polyisoprenylated benzophenone derivative found in various species of Garcinia and is known to possess antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. It’s also been identified as an effective monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitor.
MAO-B is the enzyme that breaks down dopamine in the body. Inhibition of MAO-B may lead to longer lasting dopamine levels, supporting prolonged motivation, focus, and mood.
GarCitrin includes both garcinol and hydroxycitric acid.
A 12-week human study (carried out by Sabinsa the creators of GarCitrin), found that GarCitrin led to greater:
- reductions in body weight
- Reductions in perceived level of appetite
- increases in muscle and lean body mass
- increases in basal metabolic rate BMR than HCA
Based on these findings, some researchers theorize that garcinol (or some other compound in the extract) may be increasing the bioavailability of hydroxycitric acid, and therefore providing greater benefits.
Paradoxine is a well-known patented grains of paradise extract standardized for 6-paradol. Human studies find that supplementation with Paradoxine may help to stimulate thermogenesis in brown fat and reduce body fat mass and waist circumference.[46,47]
What’s more, these studies found that daily ingestion of Paradoxine also led to reductions in visceral fat.
Visceral fat is a type of fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity and is located near several vital organs, including the liver, stomach, and intestines
Excessive levels of visceral fat are known to increase the risk for several diseases, including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Insulin resistance
- Heart attacks
- Heart disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Certain cancers
Visceral fat is also known to raise certain inflammatory markers, including IL-6, IL-1β, PAI-I and TNF-α.
CapsiAtra is a patented extract of sweet peppers standardized for dihydrocapsiate, a chemical cousin of capsaicin.
As you’re probably aware capsaicin is the fiery alkaloid responsible for the “bite” of chile peppers. Capsaicin can stimulate the TRPV1 receptor in the mouth, causing noradrenaline to be released, which is beneficial for stimulating brown fat thermogenesis. The end result is increased energy expenditure and calorie burning.
However, ingesting capsaicin is known to lead to GI distress in many individuals. This is where dihydrocapsiate comes in.
It is a non-pungent alkaloid, meaning it doesn’t cause the same burning sensation in the mouth and GI tract as capsaicin might. Capsaicin can also affect the flavor of a supplement, imparting a noticeable “fiery-ness” to it.
CapsiAtra doesn’t come with these unwanted effects, yet it’s still noted to enhance fat oxidation and energy expenditure.
Moreover a 2009 study found that as little as 6mg per day of capsinoids was associated with an increase in fat oxidation and subsequent loss of abdominal fat.
Researchers also noted the supplement to well tolerated and, more importantly, safe.

BioPerine® is included for its ability to enhance nutrient uptake via piperine’s inhibition of the major drug-metabolizing enzyme in the body CYP3A4 as well as the drug transporter P-glycoprotein.
Piperine also helps increase dopamine release in the body by stimulating the TRPV receptor in the brain. And, as we mentioned above, stimulating the TRPV receptor also helps increase thermogenic energy expenditure.[50,52]
