Thyroid Hormone Poor Obesity Treatment

Brian Turner

Posted on June 11 2018

The thyroid gland is an important regulator of metabolism and metabolic rate. Some bodybuilders take thyroid hormone (T3 and/or T4) to promote weight loss. A review of literature by scientists from the University of Southern California concluded that little evidence exists supporting the use of thyroid hormone for treating obesity. The drug did not affect weight loss, protein breakdown, heart rate, cardiac output or blood vessel resistance. Few well-controlled studies exist, so we need more research to determine the role of thyroid hormone in weight-loss programs. (Journal Clinical Endocrinology Metabolism 94: 3663-3675)
